In Sweden, Voices Are Raising For A Bitcoin Reserve – To Be Answered By April 16, Here Is The Proposal

Citing Bitcoin’s (BTC) global adoption and gold-like monetary properties, Swedish MP Rickard Nordin has formally called on the government to consider adding BTC to the country’s foreign exchange reserves. In a formal written question to Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson, Nordin proposed a strategic change to Sweden’s reserve policy, not by purchasing Bitcoin directly, but by preserving BTC assets that have been seized by authorities such as the police or customs authorities. The investigation, listed under file number 2024/25:997, requires the government to respond by April 16. Nordin said Bitcoin’s decentralized nature and role as a hedge against inflation could benefit Sweden’s financial resilience. He drew on international examples, noting the growing interest in digital assets by U.S. states and federal agencies, where Bitcoin is seen as a modern equivalent to gold in times of geopolitical and economic volatility. Currently, Sweden’s central bank, Sveriges Riksbank, holds a conservative portfolio, mainly consisting of foreign currencies and gold. Nordin called on the government to reconsider its reserve strategy in light of evolving global financial instruments and trends. The Ministry of Finance has yet to make a statement on the proposal, and it remains unclear whether the government will consider changing the Riksbank's mandate to include Bitcoin. *This is not investment advice.
