Ross Ulbricht to Break Silence in New Documentary on Silk Road Saga

Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the now-defunct Silk Road online marketplace, is set to share his story in a new documentary. This marks the very first time he has had a direct role in narrating his experience. Known for creating what was dubbed “the Amazon for Drugs,” the Silk Road facilitated hundreds of millions in illegal sales, leading to a dramatic FBI manhunt and his 2013 arrest at a San Francisco library. Ulbricht was later sentenced to two life terms plus 40 years for his role in the site’s operation. From Prison to Pardon In an unexpected turn, Ulbricht was pardoned by US President Donald Trump and released from federal prison on January 21st. The pardon, fulfilling a pledge Trump made at the Libertarian National Convention last May, has been welcomed by the crypto community which has rallied behind Ulbricht. Now free, Ulbricht collaborated with filmmakers to provide a firsthand account of his journey, reflecting on the creation of the Silk Road, its downfall, and the implications of his case, as per the latest reports . Since his 2015 conviction, Ulbricht avoided media interviews, maintaining a low public profile despite intense interest in his case. Behind the scenes, however, filmmakers Jonah Tulis and Blake J. Harris began compiling Ulbricht’s story in 2019, recording over 60 hours of interviews. Their efforts are now culminating in a nearly completed documentary set to debut in 2025, with Submarine taking charge of both production and global distribution. Media Attention Over the Years The media has revisited Ulbricht’s story on several occasions. In November 2020, CBS aired a documentary titled The FBI Declassified: The Dangerous Journey on the Silk Road, offering an in-depth look at the FBI investigation that dismantled the dark web marketplace. The documentary included an exclusive interview with Julia Vie, Ulbricht’s former girlfriend. Vie painted a contrasting image of Ulbricht, asserting that he was not motivated by wealth and reportedly did not even own a car while denying that he was a drug pusher. In 2021, Ulbricht’s story was brought to the silver screen with the release of ‘Silk Road,’ a film directed by Tiller Russell and starring Nick Robinson. Since Ulbricht’s release from federal prison, donations have steadily poured in to support him. For instance, the cryptocurrency exchange Kraken made a sizeable contribution of $111,111. Data from Arkham Intelligence reveals that his wallet has received a total of 2.78 BTC, which is worth approximately $288,270, including Kraken’s donation.
