Crypto PAC Targets Texas Democrat Over Anti Crypto Votes

The PAC pointed to Green’s votes against key digital asset bills like the GENIUS Act and the CLARITY Act. The group also argues that Green’s stance is hostile to innovation and out of step with Texas’s growing crypto community. Crypto PAC Targets Al Green A pro-crypto political action committee is escalating its efforts to influence the upcoming midterm elections, and pledged to spend $1.5 million to oppose Texas Representative Al Green in the Democratic primary over his stance on digital asset legislation. Protect Progress is an affiliate of the major crypto super PAC Fairshake, and confirmed that it will target Green in the March primary due to his opposition to key crypto-related bills. In a statement to The Hill, the group said that as a member of the House Financial Services Committee, Green tried to “stop American innovation in its tracks.” The PAC argued that Texas voters deserve representation that supports what it described as a growing crypto community in the state. Texas Representative Al Green Green has represented Texas’s 9th congressional district since 2005, and voted against the stablecoin-focused GENIUS Act and the crypto market structure CLARITY Act, both of which passed the House last year. Crypto advocacy organizations pointed to those votes as evidence of his opposition to the industry. Stand With Crypto, which is a group that tracks lawmakers’ positions on digital assets, rated Green as “strongly against crypto” based on his voting record and public statements. On the other hand, Green’s primary challenger, Christian Menefee, has been rated “strongly supports crypto” by the same organization. According to Stand With Crypto, Menefee expressed support for legislation that would use blockchain technology to address real-world issues, including combating deed fraud by recording property records on-chain. He has also indicated that he would back or introduce bills promoting practical, public-serving blockchain applications to protect families from scams and modernizing government systems. Green and Menefee are set to face off in the Democratic primary in March for a reshaped Houston-area district. Texas will be among the first states to hold primary elections on March 3, alongside Arkansas and North Carolina. The general election is scheduled for Nov. 3. The move against Green is the latest example of the crypto industry’s growing involvement in US politics. During the 2024 election cycle, digital asset interests emerged as one of the largest sources of political spending. Fairshake alone reportedly spent about $130 million. (Source: Follow the Crypto) Super PACs like Protect Progress and Fairshake can raise unlimited funds from donors but are prohibited from coordinating directly with candidates or their campaigns. Instead, they typically deploy funds through advertising and other independent expenditures that are designed to influence voters.
