Bo Hines to Step Down as Head of White House Crypto Council

The leadership of the Presidential Council of Advisers for Digital Assets, known as the crypto council, is set to change. According to journalist Eleanor Terrett, Bo Hines, the leader of the council, is quitting his job as the Head of the crypto council. Reportedly, Hines will be succeeded by his deputy, Patrick Witt. In a recent X post, the pro-crypto leader confirmed the news. Hines said he will still maintain his presence at the White House. Bo Hines to Take on Advisory Role In December 2024, Bo Hines, a former football player turned crypto investor, was nominated by President Trump to lead the crypto council . Three months into the role, he has made a significant impact in the crypto space. It was reported that by April 2025, Hines had met with more than 150 crypto figures. Hines made the council a main hub for crypto policy coordination, aiming to match federal plans with industry needs. He led talks on policies and gave advice on creating favorable crypto rules and regulations. Despite quitting his leadership role, Hines is set to serve as an adviser, helping with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and crypto-related projects. He will work alongside White House AI and Crypto leader David Sacks. Patrick Witt Brings Government Experience to Crypto Council Patrick Witt, the incoming head of the crypto council, is no stranger to public service. He served as Deputy Chief of Staff at the U.S. Office of Personnel Management during Trump’s first term. He later held senior roles in government after an unsuccessful political run. In 2021, Witt campaigned for Georgia’s 10th congressional district but later shifted his focus to running for Georgia State Insurance Commissioner. However, he was defeated in the Republican primary. Despite these setbacks, he returned to government in 2025. He became the deputy director of the crypto council. Witt was also the acting director of the Department of Defense’s Office of Strategic Capital. Notably, this is a Pentagon office that invests in emerging technologies Witt also has a background in football. He played quarterback for Yale University and briefly joined the New Orleans Saints as a free agent. Unlike Hines, Witt does not have direct experience in the crypto industry. New Leadership Signals Shift in U.S. Crypto Policy Approach The leadership change comes as the U.S. crypto industry is moving away from past tough policy issues . This industry is also experiencing fast technological advancement. Hines was known for working closely with industry leaders. He focused on fostering cooperation and building trust between both public and private sectors. Many fear that there might be a change in leadership style in the council. This stems from Witt’s lack of direct crypto industry experience. Nevertheless, others hope his strong government record may steer the council toward integrating crypto with broader technology policies.
