Russian President Putin Speaks for the First Time on the US Proposed Ukraine Deal

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia agreed with US proposals for a ceasefire in Ukraine, but said any cessation of hostilities must address the underlying causes of the conflict. Speaking at a press conference in the Kremlin following talks with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Putin said many details still needed to be worked out. Putin also said he was open to discussing the issue with US President Donald Trump. But we proceed from the fact that this cessation should be in a way that will lead to long-term peace and eliminate the root causes of this crisis,” Putin told reporters. Trump, who has vowed to end the war, said at the White House on Wednesday that the Kremlin hoped the United States would accept a 30-day ceasefire proposal. Ukraine has signaled support for the plan, which Trump described as an effort to end the ongoing “bloodbath.” Putin thanked Trump for his efforts to broker peace but said more negotiations were needed. “The idea itself is correct and we absolutely support it,” he said, adding: “But there are issues we need to discuss.
